NATIONAL SCIENCE BOWL

An annual nationwide science and math competition for high school and middle school students hosted by the US Department of Energy (DOE).

THE ASSIGNMENT

Provide audio, video, lighting, webcasting, graphics, and scoring software support to operate a live, broadcast quality game-show style event, with relatively short turn around setup and no opportunity for formal rehearsal.

Gameshow-style
broadcast

Live webcast format with open captions

Customized event scoring and timer graphics support

OUR SOLUTION

For the Cyber Challenge (elimination competition)

We provided projection for the real-time status display of the teams progress through a "capture the flag" style problem solving competition, as well as power distribution, monitors, keyboards, mice, computer networking and IT services plus management of house provided audio support.

For the Final Competition

We provided audio, video, lighting, custom configured scoring software, design & video editing services.

We designed the display design for the scoring software, programmed the software to operate with simple controls using a stream-deck controller, trained the DOE staff to operate the software and integrated the overlays into displays to keep the competitors, game moderators and audiences connected to the run time, game rounds and scores.

We designed the custom branded background and foreground graphics to integrate the live switched camera video, game graphics, live open captions, lower third graphics and "visual bonus" game question support as well as scenic graphics for the on stage monitors that displayed team names and winner animation graphics.

Scenic backdrop, competitor and game master desks were provided by Hatch Exhibits (our client, holds the contract with DOE). We repaired, reconfigured, focused and supplemented the house lighting system to light their scenic and stage talent properly for the webcast.

We managed the video distribution to compose separate feeds for the live audience, game masters and competitors as well as scenic decor monitors.

The game moderators managed the competition gameplay, Future View used one operated and two robotic cameras and directed the camera switching for the the program feed.

Our audio lead managed mics for presenters at the podium, the game moderators off stage and the competitors on stage to open/close mics in an unscripted series of gameplay. Contestants used an electronic buzzer to buzz in for the opportunity to answer questions. We also provided a direct communication line from the "Science Judge" to an in-ear-monitor for the game moderators to confirm any questionable answers from the students.
